Last week's Cookies For A Cause event at Hanscom Air Force Base drew Girl Scouts from around Eastern Massachusetts, including more than one troop from Lynnfield. In these two images, members of Girl Scout Troop 62047 are shown with Air Force personnel after delivering a number of donated boxes of cookies from town. In all, some 30,000 boxes of donated cookies from the Boston area are now making their way to U.S. troops serving overseas.
Lynnfield Girl Scout Troop #66345 recently visited Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford as part of the Cookies for a Cause program. About 1,500 Girl Scouts (GSEM) gathered to make cards for the troops, drink hot chocolate and join in a sing-a-long. Of the more than 2 million boxes sold across the Greater Boston area, 30,000 were donated to what has been dubbed "Operation Cookie Drop" and will be loaded on a plane and shipped overseas to eager troops. On Tuesday, the Friends of the Lynnfield Senior Center had their annual Chowder Day fundraiser. The Our Lady of the Assumption Girls CYO Bantam team ended their regular season in first place with an impressive 14-1 record which they took into the North Shore CYO league playoffs this past weekend. In the semi-finals, they defeated Immaculate Conception of Salem then moved on to the final round clinching the Championship with a 24–22 victory over St. Pius of Lynn. Students in Ms. Coat’s math class were the first class to use the new Ipad cart in the Library Media Center. Janice Alpert, the LHS Library Media Specialist was excited to work with Coats to integrate the new technology into the lesson planning process. Together, Ms. Alpert and Ms. Coats planned and then executed the lesson. The students photographed graphs they created on paper using the Ipad or by using the free graphing calculator app. They then organized their work using another free app, Evernote. One great thing about going to events such as this is that you never know what famous people you might run into. In this case, Weird Al Yankovic, was among the people that Mr. Bloom ran into.
Some local kids got a head start on their Valentine's Day festivities with help from local craftsperson Jeanne Nielsen. Nielsen was at the Lynnfield Library Tuesday evening to lead a rubber stamping workshop for kids aged 8-12.

On Thursday, Lynnfield Middle School held a bone marrow drive seeking a match for a young student named Matthew who is fighting leukemia. This group of LMS students were among those who lent their time to help out on Thursday. For those who came to the marrow drive, a simple swab on the cheek was all it took to potentially make a huge difference for a local family. Looking ahead, some fundraising activities are also in the works to help defray Matthew's medical costs. More information will be provided on this website about these efforts as they come up.
On Saturday, Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei opened his campaign headquarters on 932 Lynnfield Street, near the Goodwin Rotary. Workmen have spent much of the winter disconnecting utilities and removing various materials from three buildings left over from the old Colonial property. With that task wrapped up, this week they began the process of actually taking down the old pro shop, utility shed and restaurant. In the coming months, a Whole Foods market will be going up on this particular spot just off of Route 128 and Walnut Street.
