Izzy Figucia and Rachel Maglio beat out Amesbury 8-3, Masco 8-4, and Pentucket 8-0 to take the title of CAL Open Doubles champions earlier this month at Ipswich High School.  Both girls are freshmen. Figucia plays on the varsity team and Maglio plays on the JV team but was asked to play up for the tournament by Coach Craig Stone.
Lynnfield’s Squirt 2 hockey team is celebrating their recent victory in the Valley Hockey League Championship game last Saturday, April 7. The team got off to a slow start this season, but really picked up over the past month. In the playoffs, they defeated four higher-seeded teams, with two of those wins coming from overtime shootouts. The Lynnfield Library's Curious About Cuisine group welcomed author and nutritonist and educator Anna Tourkakis for a talk Wednesday afternoon that focused on healthy eating. Anna is the author of the cookbook "Delicious Simplicity," which offers healthy recipes, including desserts, with a Mediterranean influence. Her columns on nutrition and healthy eating, complete with recipes, have also run on this website in recent months. Last week, this website ran a gallery of photos by Lynnfield resident Suzy Julian showing bald eagles around Suntaug Lake. Also included in those shots were a couple of other ones, including tihs great image of ducks flying low over the lake. Two photos by Suzy will run on this website today.
The word around town is that bald eagles have begun nesting at one or two spots near Suntaug Lake in Lynnfield. This is significant because it shows that their population continues to rebound after being pushed to the brink of extinction less than a lifetime ago. Just two decades ago, it was a pretty big deal when bald eagles were reported nesting at the mouth of Merrimack River up by Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, which isn't bad in its own right for outdoor photography. Tony and Audrey Larosa of Lynnfield recently finished first at the Eastern Mass. Bridge Association (EMBA) Sectional tournament. They won the 299er Pairs at the Winter Sectional held in Watertown.EMBA’s next tournament is April 13-15 at the Armenian Cultural Center, 47 Nichols Ave., Watertown.  Players will compete at all levels.    The tournament begins at 7:30 Friday.  Other sessions are Saturday at 10:30 and 3:00, and Sunday at 10:30.  Cost is $9.  Games last about 3 1/2 hours, and players may compete in one or more events for trophies and other prizes.  For more information, call Peter & …
The Lynnfield Middle School 5th Grade class attended their annual Boston Symphony Youth Concert at Symphony Hall on Friday, March 15th.  The program was entitled The Beat Goes On:  A Musical Look at Perseverance, Pace and Pulse in Music and was conducted by Thomas Wilkins.  The concert featured music by an array of composers like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and John Williams.
Two students from Lynnfield Middle School were selected to participate in this year’s Massachusetts Music Educators Association’s Northeastern District Junior Music Festival.  Over 400 students from more than ninety-five public and private schools were selected from over 900 students to participate in the event.  Pictured from left to right:  Cassandra Haas performed with the District Girls Chorus and Ellen Welter played french horn with the District Orchestra.

Last week, Christine's Cafe and Confections welcomed Beth Aldrich, author of "Real Moms Love To Eat." The event drew a good-sized group of town residents, and I'm told that it featured some outstanding refreshments as well. Owner Christine Picciarello reports that she hopes to hold other events like this in the future at her cafe, which opened up in town last fall.

Pictured above are John Howell, Proprietor of Post Office Square Mobil and Suzanne Aiken, Volunteer for Gathering Change, Inc.  Suzanne approached John about collecting spare change and he said: "I'll do whatever I can to help with hunger in Lynnfield!" To date Gathering Change, Inc., has supported over 40 food pantries in Massachusetts. Mary’s photo was selected by race sponsor John Hancock to represent Boston Marathon fans, in one of eight designs that will line several streets in Boston until the race, scheduled for April 16, 2012.
