Free Lunch and Learn Series Continues

A free Lunch and Learn series sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the North Shore (JFNS) will continue with a focus on photography on Monday, May 7 from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the JFNS offices, 39 Norman St., 3rd floor, Salem. The series, entitled Jewish Art: Preserving the Past, Painting the Present, is taught by Alanna Cooper, Director of Adult Jewish Education for JFNS and a cultural anthropologist. Participants should bring a lunch.

The May 7 session will feature Jewish photography through the visual record of Roman Vishniac’s work about Eastern Europe on the cusp of destruction, as well as contemporary photographers Zion Ozeri and Frederic Brenner, who seek to document the world’s most far-flung Jewish communities.

The final session will take place on Monday, June 4 and will examine Jewish music through the centuries-old verses of Judah HaLevi from Spain’s Golden Age as sung by Israeli Etti Ankri, as well as contemporary pieces, woven with music and lyrics from Latin America, West Africa and Iran, as interpreted by world-renowned Israeli musicians Rita Yahan-Farouz and Idan Raichel.

Participants are requested to pre-register by contacting Cooper at acooper@jfns.org or 978-224-4900.
