When In San Diego, Try The Lynnfield Sandwich
Former local couple now runs two Boston-style sub shops in San Diego, featuring a "Lynnfield" and a "Burlington" sandwich for their former towns.
If you happen to be traveling in San Diego anytime soon, you can stop by one of the two Bite of Boston Submarines locations run by former area residents Bob and Hope (Aschenbrand) Major. Bob is a Burlington native while Hope formerly lived on Hart Road with her family in Lynnfield and attended school in town before moving to Stoneham in the 10th grade.
While this eatery is on the other side of the continent, its local influences are all over the menu. The Lynnfield sandwich is roast beef, bacon, melted cheddar, onions, and bbq sauce. The Burlington’s Best sandwich is smoked turkey, bacon, melted cheddar cheese and bbq sauce.
There are also “Northender,” “Boston Big-Timer,” “Cambridge Wrap,” and “Big Dig” sandwiches on the menu, and even Fenway Franks, Ipswich fried clams, Boston baked beans, a “Boston Garden Salad” and “Wicked Awesome Chowda.” According to the website, all of the sandwich bread is even shipped across the country from Piantedosi Bakery in Malden.
For a further taste of home, the eatery’s website even features a “Bawstin Knowledge” section featuring tips on pronouncing local places and terms.
Editor's Note: Just for the heck of it, here's a fun poll asking what would the official sandwich of Lynnfield be.

Thanks John. I'm thinking one of those sandwiches would actually hit the spot right about now!

They got it right by having Piantedosi's ship to them. Is roast beef the official sandwich of Lynnfield? Maybe that could be a good poll question Bill. I think MA in general, the meatball sub is the one, but we all have opinions.

Don, that's a great idea, let me put together a little fun poll for tomorrow on the official sandwich of Lynnfield. I'm a born and bred North Shore guy myself, so I'm definitely inclined to lean toward roast beef, but only with that amazing sauce...

When I was growing up, it was either a meatball sub or a veal cutlet. Then again, I didn't grow up in Lynnfield. We did vote on the best sub shop and I remember the winner was known for thier roast beef. I would be it would win.

What was Pentad's? I've seen old photos of Pillings Pond that show some sort of boat house, but I'm not really aware of any previous businesses around there...

It was a little sub shop in the front where Supino Insurance is now, they had a counter with a couple stools in the picture window looking onto Summer St. That was the only one in town before Lynnfield House. I believe they had pizza also. It would be great to see some pictures.

I am planning to see about getting some more vintage Then And Now photos later this month. I will definitely keep my eye out for that. Thanks, Bill.

Before it was called Pentad's, it was called LeBlanc's. They had the best tuna subs!
