Town Finished Winter With Snow Budget Surplus

Thanks to a scarcity of snow this winter, the town Department of Public Works can report a surplus of $1,016 for the current year -even after replenishing the road salt supply. Of course, this also assumes that we don't get a repeat of that April Fool's Day blizzard from years ago.
According to DPW Director Dennis Roy, this is the first time in his 30-year career that he can recall the town having a surplus in its snow removal budget.
While the winter snow was missed in many quarters (and not so much in others), the unseasonably warm weather couldn't have been better timed from the perspective of town taxpayers. That's because last year's unusually snowy winter forced the town by mid-February to spend about $500,000 on snow removal - a dramatic increase over the $120,000 the town has budgeted for the entire winter each of the past several years.

Are you telling me that out of the $120,000 budgeted we spent all but $1000 on snow removal? On a snowless winter.

The DPW also has info on the various weather episodes from this season here, there were only two actual snowstorms but some other occasions that would have required salt, etc. That budget figure also apparently included replenishing the supply of road salt. So I don't have an itemized look at that budget line, but inquired, and received the answers up there in the story.

Something sure does seem out of wack, where would we be if we had a few more storms. Is that why the budget supposedly has a surplus of $900 according to David Nelson at the Candidates night.
