Then And Now: The Civil War Monument

Each week, Lynnfield Patch runs a photo from the files of the Lynnfield Historical Society and talks about what's there today.

It's not often that I come across a historic spot in Lynnfield that I haven't been to, but this Civil War training camp continues to elude me. I've been told that Camp Stanton, as described in this 2011 article that ran on Lynnfield Patch, was located near present-day Green Street and the Holiday Inn on Route 1 over the Peabody line. Where this monument itself stands, I cannot say for sure.

A past "Then and Now" column on this website even had an old photo from the camp, which operated until soon before the start of the World War I era. Another time, an eBay report on this website noted that 50 years after the Civil War, a group of veterans who trained at Camp Stanton came back to Lynnfield for a reunion.

Each week, these photos are provided by the Lynnfield Historical Society. Are you interested in joining them? Just send a $15 check to Bob Gillon, Lynnfield Historical Society Treasurer, 300 Main Street, Lynnfield, MA 01940. Include your mailing address, email address and phone number.
