Then And Now: Executive Park At Lynnfield
From time to time, Lynnfield Patch runs a photo scanned from the files of the Lynnfield Historical Commission and compares it to what's there now.
In the latest version of Then And Now, we look back to the former Executive Park at Lynnfield plaza. This photo appears to be from the early to mid 1960s and one of the few business names you can see listed on the sign outside the plaza is the Lynnfield Villager.
So, this photo was found in a file that had a label bearing the name "Kernwood Restaurant." That large building toward the back could pass for a restaurant, but that's all guess work from this end.
What I do know is that a web search of the Kernwood Restaurant brings up an address of 55 Salem Street for the former Lynnfield business. Today, 55 Salem Street is the location of Sunrise Senior Living. However, Sunrise is home to a historical marker noting that in the 1930s and 1940s, the famed Kimball's Starlight Ballroom stood on that spot until it was razed in 1963.

Yes, That is the Kernwood. The Kernwood was there until they built Sunrise.(70's 80's and part of the 90's?)

Definately the Kernwood. it was probably the biggest tenant there. Great bar. Favorite watering hole for local golfers. Great food too whether you ate in the bar or the restaraunt. Wicked good prime rib. Big loss when it closed. If you dont remember it you're making me feel real old because I sure do.

I never made it to the Kernwood although I was living in NH when it closed and also grew up in Danvers so I wouldn't have had much reason to go there. At least in another year or so the town should be getting some good dinner restaurants again.

Much like Meltharb's raises the bar to the roof for any ice cream shops, the Kernwood raises the bar for any restaurant. The one in Malden was great and when Lynnfield closed, it ended an era. Davios is a great restaurant, looking forward to that place.

I think this photo is more likely from the mid seventies. If you look at the car parked to the left partially under the sign, it's a 74 or 75 Ford Torino four door. It has front and rear 5 mph bumpers, not mandated until 1973.
I too, miss the Kernwood Restaurant. It had great food for the money and perfect for family dining on a Sunday.

Steven I was also looking at some of those cars and wondering about the 70s myself...

The Kernwood was a great place to dine and they had the BEST popovers anywhere. Food was good and prices reasonable. Still miss the place.

I don't remember the Kernwood having popovers. Sure you are not thinking of George Pages Colonial Restaurant. They had the best popovers. That restaurant was solely missed when it closed.

Shame on you.

Actually I forgot about Ming's which is quite good and wasn't thinking about the 99 because it's a chain, but Mia Cucina is gone and Bertucci's is in Peabody. So yes, a couple of good ones were overlooked there.
