Resolving to Get Organized

Storage solutions for controlling clutter

Seems like “get more organized” is a top resolution for most of us after the flurry of the holidays. Just putting away all of the decorations and finding a new home for gifts received is enough to make anyone want to clear clutter.

In order to put everything in its place, it is always best to start out with a plan that includes ideas for storage. Take a look around and determine where your biggest problem areas are, and then set time aside to tackle them one by one.

Is your junk drawer overflowing? Devote one hour to giving it a good sort. I like to start by taking everything out and then grouping like items together. Return items to their appropriate places in your home and then keep the “must haves” in a divided drawer organizer.

Is your closet looking chaotic? First, go through your wardrobe honestly. Are there pieces that you have never worn or have only worn a few times? Donate or consign the items that aren’t being used and you will have much more room to see the pieces that truly make you feel your best.

To add even more space, replace wooden hangers with the incredibly slim anti-slip velvet version. These are available in a variety of colors and can be found online or at most home department stores. Next group items together to make it easier to find what you are looking for — line up pants, skirts, dresses and tops in categories. It really will make starting the day that much easier.

Does your family constantly ask “Where is the clicker?” or have technological gadgets taken over your coffee table? Corall clickers and phones in one spot and you will always know where to find them. Throw a package of extra batteries in the bottom of the container and you will be one step ahead when your family starts asking “Where are the batteries?”

Do you have surfaces that are covered with lots of small items? Decorative boxes are a great way to hide the everyday items that don’t look pretty but need to be accessible. I found a large wooden box that I use to hold the variety of coffees and teas that used to sit in boxes next to our coffee maker.

A unique-looking box by the front door can hold keys, change, etc. Children can have a “treasure box” of their own to hideaway the numerous small favorite items that often end up scattered around a room.

How is your entryway looking? Cold weather gear can take up a lot of space during the winter months while putting a large burden on coat closets and mudrooms. Items that can’t be hung up, like hats and mittens, often get lost in the shuffle. Small wire baskets – like the ones found at office supply stores – can keep a set of favorite mittens and hats together, at the same time allowing for air drying between uses.

What are some of your favorite ways to fight clutter and get organized in your home?
