POLL: What Do You Think Of The Fat Cactus Wetlands Situation?

Weigh in on this longstanding issue that has been in the local news on and off for going on two years now.

Yesterday on the Lynnfield Patch Facebook page, I said that I would run a poll today asking local residents where they stand on this ongoing impasse with the Lynnfield Conservation Commission and The Fat Cactus.

Basically, the situation revolves around a gravel parking area behind the Fat Cactus that was found to violate wetland regulations but which over the course of many months has apparently not been fixed. This week, the conservation commission even voted to reissue its criminal complaint against the restaurant after it failed to send somebody with decision-making authority to the meeting as requested. This article from earlier in the week provides some more background information on the matter.

That said - where do you stand on this increasingly longstanding town issue? Vote in the poll and feel free to offer your own comments (on anything from the tacos to the wetlands issue) in the boxes below.

  • Where do you stand on this impasse between the Fat Cactus and the town?

(Voting has been closed for this question)
    • It's just a few wetlands, the town should back off.
        19 (38%)
    • We can't let town regulations be flouted at will. Turn up the heat.
        25 (51%)
    • I don't really have an opinion on this.
        5 (10%)
    Total votes: 49

This restaurant has been arrogant in not dealing with this issue. Further, they park a truck in a non-parking spot as further signage. Since it does not appear to move that represents additional violations on parking and signage. If it is stored there they should be paying an excise tax as well. The Planning Board should review sign regulations since the circular sign violates the intent of the size limitations and the recent addition of an additional computerized section with changing messages is further evidence this operation is not corresponding with the desires of the Lynnfield community.

The EPA is by far one of the biggest jokes in Massachusetts. The fat cactus gets hammered for making a parking lot in the middle of a wetland, however, half of lynnfield got torn apart when they expanded the town north and south including Ramsdell way.

Its not going to really matter anyhow, let them expand. We need better bars like the fat cactus around. Wetlands are terrible anyway. Its not like we're protecting the everglades in Florida.

The cons outweigh the pros that we have in this certain situation. The fat cactus is in fact a resturant, tends to be open outdoors many times as well due to the garage doors. Wetlands produce mosquitos, are a homeland for smaller mammals including beavers, and even various snakes. The worst thing about them is the mold. We don't want airborne spores travelling to the fat cactus causing health violations do we? No we do not, hell in about 30 years, those wetlands will be pavement anyways. Sorry to say, but MA just keeps expanding the population. We need more space.

Sign Regulations...about those, are you mad? Its route 1, if we don't go blind from the neon signs and advertising, its not route 1. Tax them the bigger and brighter the sign is, and then put that money towards rebuilding and keeping route 1 intact.
