As an education professional in Revere, Salvatore Cammarata was a teacher, administrator, principal, coach and counselor in a 33-year career that he wrapped up in August of 2010. Now, the Lynnfield resident is hoping to share his experience and insights as a candidate for one of the two open Lynnfield School Committee seats.
In Revere Public Schools, Cammarata taught 6th grade for eight years, was principal for 12 years at a pre-K to grade 8 magnet school with about 1,400 students and 100 teachers, and spent 16 years as an administrator. The magnet school was the first of its kind in Revere and had a focus on technology. He also coached middle school basketball and softball. In 2010, he earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Cambridge College and he also holds masters degrees in guidance counseling and in school administration. Since retiring, he has done some consulting work for G-7
In Lynnfield, Cammarata has been a Little League coach and an assistant youth soccer coach. He is the father of three grown children, all of whom went through the Lynnfield public school system. Cammarata notes that during his career, he did not have as much time as he would have liked to be more involved with the Lynnfield school system. "A lot of my obligations were to that (Revere) school district," he recalled, adding that Lynnfield schools were a "great experience for our three children." He lives in Lynnfield with his wife Barbara.
One thing that motivated Cammarata to run for school committee this year was the time he spent last year on the superintendent search committee. "I got a real sense of how nice it would be to be engaged in the process," he said, noting that he has also been a parent in town for 25 years and brings a number of useful experiences and skills as a prospective school committee member.
If elected, Cammarata said, he would bring a longstanding interest in technology to the school committee, as well as administrative experience with teacher evaluation protocol and also experience with grant writing.
