Do You Know Where This Was Taken?
Each week, Lynnfield Patch runs an image taken somewhere in town and invites readers to guess where it is.
As someone who prides himself on being able to take some fairly beautiful pictures, this image is almost physically painful to have to put up on the website. That said, a cryptic image is a cryptic image, at least for the purposes of this column. With that - do you know where this was taken?

HAHA Luke I"m scraping the bottom of the barrel over here for "Where Is This?" photos! I'll try to get some new ones this week but have also been trying to ask people if they want to send in some of their own to mix it up a bit. This picture is awful though... Bill

Yes, it's behind the stores, and it has a RED light on top that goes on when the pumps, or water backs up.....

Well, I did mean Worthen's. Besides, the bakery, there was a shoe store and a hardware store in the back.

Dorothy.....and our dentist had an office above the bakery. I was going way back on Roundy's Store. I wonder if anyone can remember the names of the ten original businesses that occupied the center market place when it first opened? (besides Jay K)

Ernie, you go back a little further than I do, but I remember (and loved) The Village Room restaurant, Karen's Bakery, The Village Footman (shoe store), I think a beauty salon where the present one still is, and the hardware store. Out front I remember Worthen's, Kimball's law office, the Pioneer Shoppe, Barkey's jewelry store, and Rodman's gas station...was it Gulf?

Nikki--Thats good! I could not remember any store names in back except Karens Bakery. I was thinking of the stores/businesses in the front, which were built several years before the back. From left to right in the front....Rodhams Gulf (Arthur & Dave Rodham)...Lynnfield Jewelers (Barkey)...Marstens 5&10 (I think the name changed to Pioneer Shoppe, a few years later??)...Drug store (Julius Rombolt & wife)....Worthens Food Market (Irita & Ken Worthen) 2nd floor. Louis B Tuck Ins.
...Northrop & Northrop RE....Kimball Law....A barber shop (maybe Lynnfield Barbers) and a Beauty Salon, name escapes me.

Ernie, I don't remember Marstens 5&10, but how could I forget the drug store?! And, I had forgotten about the insurance company and the barber shop, too. You have a very good memory!
Have you tried the new bakery behind the stores yet? They have very good cupcakes.

Its good theres another bakery in town. Tough to sample from 3,000 miles away. :)
We live in Washington state now. Do make it back once a year for our food fixes.
The west coast just does not get it, when it comes to good fried seafood, pizza, and subs. (especially roast beef)

Nikki--Yes it was! As were many others named after families back in the day. 3 Hutchins Circle was the first house on the circle, built in 1941. We sold it in 05 after my father passed. I left Lynnfield in 1965. How long have you lived in town?

Ernie, I no longer live in Lynnfield but am nearby and still do my banking in the Center so I get over there often. I grew up there from 1952 until the early 70's and have very fond memories of the town. We had it better than the kids nowadays...I'm sure you remember we'd be out of the house after breakfast and not come home til suppertime. And we walked everywhere...very few overweight kids in those days!
What used to be across the street from you where the old High School was eventually built? I'm guessing it was woods, and you used to built forts there! I went there for Jr. high school, and we had double sessions, as the town was building the new high school up on Essex St. Have you been back to Lynnfield to see the new Middle School? It was nostalgic for me when they tore down the old one...I went over to retrieve one of the old bricks...makes a good doorstop!

Yes Nikki, Lynnfield was truly the Mayberry RFD, from the Andy Griffith show. The property across the street was known as the "Jackson Estate". A beautiful old mansion surrounded by Apple trees. The house itself was directly across from the Schwarz house. (you may have known Bobby Schwarz) It was torn down in 51/52 for the new JR HS. The rest of the property has not changed much. The road that goes in to the new middle school and fields was always there. The baseball field has been around from the 20/30's. We had a town team in the 40's and early 50's.
It seems to me that the town built a new school almost every year from the late 40's until the 70's

Ernie, I have been trying to find a picture of the Jackson Estate, but so far have been unsuccessful. Maybe Bill Laforme can help us out. Did the town take the property by imminent domain?
I do remember Bobby Schwarz and, in fact, ran into him and his wife not too long ago. I think they live up in the Byfield area.
Aren't you glad we grew up when we did? So many woods to explore and build forts! Things were much simpler then.
