Decorating a Nursery

5 steps to designing a room for baby and parent

Whether a girl or boy is on the way, decorating a nursery is an exciting project. It is a chance to go back in time and remember the innocence of childhood and to celebrate the gift of new life. Designing a room that offers a comfortable environment for both baby and parent is best achieved by keeping the following 5 decorating tips in mind:

1. Safety

Above all else, a baby's room should be safe.

  • Large pieces of furniture should be anchored to the wall to avoid toppling on little ones as they learn to pull themselves up (often times holding onto whatever is closest to their grasp, like a bureau or changing table).
  • Cords for window treatments should be out of reach.
  • Sharp edged furnishings should be avoided.
  • Objects at child level should not have loose or small parts that might present a choking hazard.
  • Electrical outlets should have protective coverings, and cords for lamps, etc. should be hidden from view as much as possible.

These are just a handful of decorating-related saftey tips ... you can easily find more online.

Installing good lighting is your first opportunity to create a space that is comfortable for baby. Lights on dimmers are highly recommended for late night feedings and peeking in on baby during naps. Window treatments with block-out lining will keep the sun out no matter what time of day the little one is taking a rest. Also, including some type of music or white noise often works to lull baby to sleep.

3. Snuggle

Having a designated spot to enjoy each other's company is so important. A chair big enough for two, whether for feedings, reading stories or playing pat-a-cake, is a design must-have. Soft blankets to spread on the ground for tummy time, or generous floor cushions for care takers to sit on while watching baby stretch and crawl will provide opportunities to be close to each other while baby plays and grows.

4. Surprise

A baby's room is the perfect spot for adding a touch of whimsy to a young family's home. Choose artwork that makes you smile or toys that engage curiousity. Stuffed animals that are unusually large in scale are another way to create an atmosphere of good old-fashioned childish glee.

5. Share

Include items in your baby's room that remind you of your own childhood. Favorite classic story books or sentimental objects (safely placed high on display shelves, of course) will create a room that will delight both baby and parent. Photos or shadow boxes that tell the story of baby's "firsts" are a sweet and sentimental touch.
